Graphic Rack and Cage Control. Galilei Software releases new module for rack and cage capacity administration.

In May 2008, Galilei Software has released the new ALPIN rack and cage administration module. The method so far ensured that the cage cards indicated the correct contents of the cages, but the cages were placed in a random position in the rack by the animal keeper without the scientist being able to follow up the position of his cage at his desk. This process caused a frequent and lengthy search of the cage in the rack. Moreover, lacking a methodical procedure in the first place, the racks have to be re-organised frequently in order to create space or to establish certain systematics. In particular, in view of the tendency emerging in the market of fitting more and more cages in a rack, this procedure still frequently applied will cause even more negative effects in the future.

The new procedure presented by Galilei Software excels by a 2D representation of the actual situation of the physical rack on the screen. All cages are marked in colour and can be opened or closed by a simple mouse click. The colour representation permits a differentiation between the processes taking place in the cages at present (such as mating cage, storage with male or female animals, et cetera) and the different lines in the different cages. Tool tips display the contents of the cages in a mouse over. Cage-related actions can be initiated easily by means of pop-up menus.

The advantages:

  • Faster overview of the actual situation at a glance.
  • The occupancy of the racks can be planned at the round table.
  • Permanent re-organisation of the cages in the rack is no longer required.
  • Distinctly less work for the animal keepers.
  • Better utilisation of the racks.
  • Easier communication between scientists and animal keepers.
  • Chaotic stockholding is possible.
